From The Journal of Balanced Reading...
This study reports the results of a year-long evaluation of the effectiveness of the Know-Its The Link to Reading in six first grade classrooms. Pre-and post testing using early literacy skills measures indicated that students who received regular supplemental instruction using Know-Its achieved significant gains in these skills when compared to students who did not participate in such instruction. As well, teachers' perceptions relative to the effectiveness of the program was positive and supportive of the program. These findings are presented in light of the effectiveness of programs such as Know-Its on students' literacy growth and development. Teacher Response: Know-Its encourages kids to talk and share their thoughts. It supported vocabulary development with small group instruction and writing activities. It also supported decoding a lot because the kids learned skills to apply to unfamiliar words and they also learned how to use those new words properly when speaking.
