Know-Its: The Link To Reading

Mr. Know-It's Pre-Readiness Kits teach and reinforce basic skills to lay the foundation for capable readers. The program begins with Colors and Shapes, progressing through Classification, Rhyming, Letter Recognition, Rebus Reading, Beginning Sounds and More.

Mr. Know-Its's Pre-Readiness Kit 1 provides opportunities for children to use oral language. Children learn to "speak up" by playing games using complete sentences. They also describe various shapes, colors, sizes, and textures as they classify objects. By using descriptive words in context, children's vocabularies are increased. Games and manipulatives provide opportunities for children to apply new vocabulary skills.

Mr. Know-It's Pre-Readiness Kit 2 provides children an awareness of all letters, particularly the ones in their name. By exposing children to all uppercase and lowercase letters, children who are capable will start making connections to print. Later, in Kit 3, each letter and sound will be taught in detail, but the purpose of Kit 2 is to increase print awareness. Singing, games, and manipulatives make matching uppercase and lowercase letters fun and easy to learn.

Mr. Know-It’s Pre-Readiness Kit 3 targets beginning sounds. Through Phonemic Awareness listening activities, pictures, and letter/sound associations, children learn to identify beginning sounds. Using Velcro® picture cards engages children in active learning as they match cards to letters in Write-On Book: Sounds. Games and puzzles give many ways for children to reinforce beginning sound identification.

Know-Its and Beyond Stage I & II build a foundation for reading by teaching strategies that children can use. Students use games and manipulatives to learn new reading skills. Strategies are even modeled on a DVD where puppets are being taught to read. Then children apply the strategy using games, magnetic manipulatives, books, and writing activities. By using multiple types of application, the program meets the individual needs of struggling readers. Therefore, a perfect fit for RTI (Response to Intervention)!

Know-Its and Beyond Stage I  sets the foundation for reading development. The first ten lessons focus on readiness for reading. Next comes one of the most important skills for beginning readers to learn: blending phonemes. Miss Diane models this strategy with puppets on a teaching DVD. Through games, manipulatives, books, writing, and magnetic lapboard activities, students apply skills that are integrated in their reading.

Know-Its and Beyond Stage II picks up where Stage I leaves off. Stage II gives many ways to read in different formats (games, manipulatives, books, magnetic lapboards, writing) to apply reading strategies. Major concepts include:  long vowels, diphthongs, inferences, multi-syllables, and high frequency words. Stage II is where reading is put into practice!
